J. Todd Northrop , M.C.
Licensed Professional Counselor
Office Ext. 27, Office Location: Ogden

I have wanted to provide counseling and psychology services with a spiritual component since I was an undergraduate studying psychology at the University of Utah. I became familiar with a wide variety of Eastern approaches to “wellness,” yet I never could fully trust what I was learning. I graduated in 1986 and have worked solely in mental health since. However, my employment did not allow addressing the spiritual domain, I lacked a degree that would allow me to practice independently, and I continued to wrestle with identifying a “spiritual component.”

In graduate school I found spiritual truth (and an approach to “wellness”) that I fully trust, Jesus Christ. Since that time, I have pursued my desire to serve in God’s Kingdom, and completed a Master’s Degree in Counseling, with a Mental Health Specialization from the University of Phoenix in 2001.

I have been the Clinical Director at the Intermountain Specialized Abuse Treatment Center (ISAT) since January 2002. Although this service setting is exclusively secular, it has provided invaluable training and experience. In addition to refining and developing important and useful skills, working with a wide variety of abuse issues has strengthened my faith and increased my awareness of my need for the intervention of the Holy Spirit, the divine counselor.

My special interests include marital and couple’s therapy with a faith based approach. Using biblical principles, along with modern and traditional psychological approaches, I have developed methods for counseling that are not only consistent with the ethical standards of my profession, but also a biblical world view. General practice areas include adults and couples. I have practical experience and specific training in treatment of depression, anxiety, stress management, trauma, post traumatic stress, sexual addiction, and chemical addictions.

My therapeutic orientation is eclectic, incorporating various psychological theories and techniques accepted in the field, individualizing them to the unique needs of the person(s) with whom I am counseling. I frequently use a cognitive-behavioral approach, and often work with dreams. When there is a need (and with permission), I focus on interpersonal relationships, including the most important one, a relationship with Jesus Christ.

I consider Christian counseling my calling and believe the Holy Spirit uses it for God’s kingdom purposes. I am active in an Evangelical Free Church and enjoy facilitating marriage workshops with my wife. We also enjoy participating in a weekly Bible study group together.
