Darryl
Collier-Freed, MS I grew up the son of a United Methodist pastor who influenced my interest in and commitment to Jesus Christ at a very young age. Through a Young Life bible study my senior year in high school, I began on a path that led to my attending Baylor University, where I participated in Campus Crusade for Christ and completed my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology in 1992. From there I discerned a call to become a therapist, and Fuller Theological Seminary provided me with graduate studies in marriage and family therapy from a Christian perspective. I graduated from Fuller with a Masters of Science in Marital and Family Therapy in the summer of 1995. Finally, I did graduate work at The Graduate Center for Child Development and Psychotherapy in clinical child psychology to further my understanding and skill in working with children, adolescents, and adults from a psychodynamic perspective. Currently, I am a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage for Marriage and Family Therapy and the Christian Association for Psychological Studies. My special interests include adolescents and their families, intensive work with adults, faith and spirituality, adoption, men’s issues, sexual orientation, relationship problems, and depression. Anxiety, oppositional-defiance, and grief counseling are additional areas of focus. My general practice also includes work with children. I see individuals, families, and couples for therapy. Broadly, my therapeutic orientation is relational. This means that I see the essence of therapeutic work to be about relationships of some kind—how we relate to God, other people, and ourselves. Psychodynamic theory helps me understand how we relate to ourselves and others (including God); family systems theory helps me understand how our relationships with others are organized; and theology helps me understand God’s purpose and presence in relationships. I am
thankful to be able to serve and be served by my work at Shepherd’s
Staff Christian Counseling Center. I couldn’t do the work I do without
the support of my wife, Anne Collier-Freed, and the joy and challenge
of my four children, Mireille (born in 2002), and our triplet boys Isaac,
Bennett, and Jeremie (born in 2005). We are thankful for our home churches,
the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Centerville and the newly
formed Peace Community Mennonite Church of Salt Lake City. As for hobbies,
I enjoy cinema, playing basketball, following my favorite athletic teams,
reading theology, and composing lyrical and instrumental songs with my
acoustic guitar. (more-vita)
